How to Download an Instagram Reel to Your Camera Roll

Tapping the paper-airplane share icon on a Reel sends a link to someone, or copies one to your clipboard — it doesn't put a video file anywhere on your phone. That's the most common point of confusion: the button that looks like "save this" is actually built for sharing, not saving.
Why Instagram doesn't just add a save-to-device button
Instagram does have a bookmark icon, but it saves the Reel to a collection inside the app, not to your phone's camera roll — you still need to be signed in and using the app to see it again. There's no built-in path from "I like this video" to "this is now a file I own," because Instagram's business is keeping people inside the app, not handing out files.
The actual steps
Copy the Reel's link from its own share menu (the same paper-airplane icon, then "Copy Link"), paste it into a downloader, and choose a format from the results. What lands in your camera roll is the same video Instagram serves when you watch it in the app — nothing added, nothing re-encoded down in quality.
Why a pasted link sometimes doesn't work
The two most common reasons: the account is private (a downloader can only reach what a logged-out visitor could already see), or the link was copied from the wrong place — a comment reply or a carousel's outer post link instead of the Reel itself. Re-copying directly from the Reel's own share button usually resolves it.
